The Necklace, By Guy De Maupassant - 823 Words
Life is Uncertain Beautiful Mathlide Loisel is an unsatisfied wife that lives a life that she most brutally hates. Her life consists of a loving husband and a comfortable home, but she still seems to be totally unhappy, ââ¬Å"She was a simple person without the money to dress well, but she was as unhappy as if she had gone through bankruptcy, for a woman have neither rank nor raceâ⬠(Maupassant 7). Loisel s sorrow over wealth and fancy things puts a constant pain on her husband. In Guy de Maupassant short story ââ¬Å"The Necklace,â⬠Mathlide Loisel goes from being a materialistic, dishonest woman to becoming an honest, hard-working woman. At the beginning of the story, Mathlide Loisel is a raging, spoiled and selfish woman; she and her husband are not well off, but she is unable to face her own situation. Loisel is harmless person that dreams about a fancy home, with all expensive belongings. Her husband s taste is for plain things, while she dreams of expensive gourmet food, ââ¬Å"When she sat down to dinner at her round table covered with a cloth that had not been washed in three days, in front of her husband who opened the kettle while declaring ecstatically, ââ¬Å"Ah good old beef stew! I don t know anything better!,â⬠( Maupassant 7). Loisel has not yet adjusted to this sort of status, just as her husband has.
